RES has chosen KK Wind Solutions to control retrofit 20 Bonus 1.3MW wind turbines and enters into a joint development project called ReLACS.
RES has chosen KK Wind Solutions to provide 20 control retrofit kits, including documentation, training and remote support for 20 Bonus 1.3MW wind turbines at the Altahullion site in Northern Ireland, owned by TRIG. Furthermore, KK Wind Solutions have entered into a joint development project called ReLACS, modernizing the wind turbine controllers and site monitoring on old wind turbines.
Upgrading with modern control technology
Upgrading the Bonus 1.3 MW turbines with modern control technology and components means optimizing and safeguarding the turbine performance – now and in the future.
With a typical return on investment in less than 3 years, our retrofit solution provides a sustainable business case – improving availability, power output and solving issues with spare part availability and lead time. It also enables effective handling of recurring alarms and faults that jeopardize turbine performance.

With the support of our specialists, the WTC6 hardware retrofit kit can be installed in just 1 day. Additionally, we provide an extensive range of software applications and advanced data analytics tools as well as monitoring services.
KK Wind Solutions will provide lifetime support and continued development on all our products. Thus fully supporting the future need for lifetime extensions, loads reduction, and optimized use of turbine assets. In general, KK Wind Solutions offer Long-term Service Agreements, enabling attractive commercial models for turbine owners to gain cash neutral investments when taking the annual profit of the turbine into consideration versus the initial investment.
Partnering to upgrade the performance of existing wind farms
Over the next couple of years, we will continue developing and exploring new ways to keep old wind turbine technology running longer and better. In collaboration with RES and ZX Lidars, under the project name ReLACS.
The ReLACS product consists of three distinct upgrades to each wind turbine on site:
- Turbine controller retrofit – retrofitting state of the art controllers onto existing operating models enables access to modern algorithms that can optimize turbine performance, reduce loads and enable advanced control and monitoring systems to be added
- Wind Farm Control, Wake Steering – yawing the turbine deflects the wind flow and provides overall energy gain
- Lidar Assisted Turbine Control (LAC) – Turbine-mounted Lidar can preview wind speeds and turbulence ahead of the turbine, providing optimized feedback that can ultimately reduce turbine loads.

TRIG, the British investment trust dedicated to investing in renewable assets, will trial the ReLACS product at several of its wind farms across the UK. The benefits of ReLACS include modernizing the wind turbine controllers and site monitoring processes and resulting in increased Annual Energy Production (AEP) whilst also reducing turbine loads, allowing for increased life expectancy. By extending the life of existing assets, there is an added sustainability benefit in keeping wind turbines operable for longer and delaying the need to replace them.
